In a translation, {{}} marks something for a secondary style, but in a form it’s used to display a value in a text field.
Therefore I have the issue where the values display fine in the English original, but in a translation the form instead only shows the variable name. There are some fields in my form that contain no text apart from the value, which work fine if I leave out the translation for those fields, but I have some values where it’s not possible to use separate text fields.
I believe a similar issue was brought up in this topic from almost two years ago, but was not able to find any options.

This is the designer view of the form. There is a single text field, with the name of the dropdown field in double curly brackets and two different text styles.

When accessing the form in its original language, it looks as expected and displays the value of the dropdown field where I placed the brackets.

This results in the German version of the page looking like this. Instead of displaying the option chosen in the dropdown field, it displays the variable name in the style that I had set for the last line and the last line has the same style as the rest of the field, as is described in the .txt file.

If I change the brackets to single curly brackets, as seems to be implied by the {time} and {length} values in the lines that are included by default in the translation file, nothing happens and the form only displays what I entered.
The signifier {{}} has two different functions depending on whether you are viewing the original or the translation, which seems unintuitive.
My main question is whether it is possible to display variables in a translation. It is possible I missed something, but I was not able to find anything about the topic in the documentation.
